Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq - (KRG.org) – Minister Falah Mustafa hosted diplomats based in the Kurdistan Region yesterday to discuss several issues, with the main emphasis on the political disagreements in Iraq and the ongoing crises in Syria.

The meeting comes at a time when the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has just decided to resume oil exports as part of a good-will gesture and in an attempt to resolve an ongoing oil and gas disagreement with the Federal Government in Baghdad. This also comes on the heels of a number of international oil and gas companies signing deals with the KRG.

Minister Mustafa commended the diplomats based in Erbil for their contributions towards Kurdistan. Mr Karwan Jamal, the Deputy Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, also participated in the meeting.

Commenting on the seventh cabinet, Minister Mustafa said that the policy of this government is to continue the redevelopment of the region, expand its relations with the international community, and address the outstanding issues with Baghdad.

He said, “We have an option of strengthening the democratic institutions in Iraq or wone can allow authoritarianism to reemerge. We remain committed to consulting with our partners and resorting to dialogue to address our disagreements”.

The session also touched on the violence in Syria and its ability to destabilise other countries in the greater region. “We will not interfere in the internal matters of Syria. The future and makeup of Syria must be decided by the Syrian people,” the minister added, while stressing at the same time that the Kurdish people of Syria should have their rights recognised and be treated as equal citizens.

Minister Mustafa also invited the diplomats to explore possible training programmes and courses for KRG officials as means of promoting human-capacity in the region.

Diplomats from the various foreign representations based in Erbil participated in the meeting, with many of them asking for the KRG’s policy and position regarding a wide range of issues. These meetings take place to ensure the diplomatic community is briefed about the latest political, economic and security developments in the region.
